Brazil’s election donors owe 660 million reais for environmental crimes in the Amazon

On September 5, Agência Pública published the article “Donors in the past election owe R$660 million for environmental crimes in the Amazon, which was based on CIPÓ’s Strategic Report “Money, power and laws: campaign financing by environmental offenders in the Legal Amazon and legislative proposals in the National Congress.”

The media article highlighted CIPÓ’s finding that, in the past elections, 422 candidates received campaign funds from people and shareholders of companies responsible for environmental crimes in the Amazon, which owe de Brazilian state 660 million reais in environmental fines.

According to CIPÓ’s co-founder and Programme Director, Maiara Folly, the non-payment of environmental fines by donors in Brazil’s past elections results from “an environment of impunity and expectation that such fines will not be enforced”
