CIPÓ comments on BRICS climate commitments in Valor Econômico

Plataforma CIPÓ’s Executive Director, Maiara Folly, was one of the experts interviewed by Valor Econômico for the article “BRICS reaffirms commitment to climate,” published on Monday (July 8). The piece highlights the approval of two key declarations during the Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro: one reaffirming support for the Paris Agreement and pressing developed countries on climate finance; and another establishing a partnership aimed at eradicating diseases affecting populations in the Global South.

According to Valor, these documents represent a significant step forward, as they place climate finance at the center of the BRICS agenda—a notable shift for a group of countries that have historically viewed themselves more as recipients than as providers of climate funding. The article also points out that BRICS is beginning to adopt a more proactive stance regarding the future of international financial institutions.

Commenting on the topic, Maiara Folly emphasized the group’s evolving approach: “Even though BRICS countries mostly position themselves as recipients of climate finance, the group has been advancing concrete proposals to shape the global governance of climate and development.”

She also highlighted the importance of South-South cooperation: “BRICS has the potential to strengthen alternative climate finance mechanisms, focusing on fairer solutions that better align with the needs of developing countries.”
