The 1 for 8 Billion campaign, which brings together civil society organizations such as Plataforma CIPÓ in defense of a more transparent and inclusive process for selecting the next person to serve as UN Secretary-General, was one of the sources for a report published by the newspaper O Globo.
According to Natalie Samarasinghe, co-founder of the campaign, the argument that the selection should be “purely merit-based” overlooks the experience of women who have already led countries, headed United Nations agencies, and taken part in peace and security negotiations.
The report also cites research and analyses carried out in partnership with 1 for 8 Billion, indicating growing support among countries for the appointment of the first woman to the organization’s highest post and reinforcing the demand for greater transparency in the selection process.
