Concerns over the Amazon reinforces are dominating environmental debates. Against this background, the Brazilian diplomacy faces challenges with regards to its bilateral relation with Germany as a result of its environmental policy, marked by record levels of deforestation. In an interview for BBC Brazil, CIP\u00d3’s Programme Director, Maiara Folly, comments on this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the European Parliament is yet to ratify the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur. The the agreement’s approval is stalled due to concerns related to Brazil’s environmental policy under the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro. According to Maiara, “the chances of the agreement having the support of a German government that includes the Green Party are minimal<\/em>“. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maiara also noted that the new German government will not immediately seek to confront Brazil, which is considered a strategic partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In 2022, Brazil will hold presidencial elections and the country’s leader may change. I believe the Germans will wait for the outcome of the electoral race to evaluate their stance in relation to Brazil\u201d, says Maiara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
