On March 3, 2021, CIP\u00d3 took part in a round table on the “Use of data and digital technologies by Non-UN Actors”, organized by the UN Department of Peace Operations (DPO), the Department of Operational Support (DOS), and the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). CIP\u00d3 shared its analyses of the adoption of digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other big-data methods, as well as innovations such as sound detection, in addressing environmental crimes, as well as in climate action.<\/strong> The presentation also covered the risks inherent in incorporating such technologies and touched on trends in the use of new technologies by organized crime groups in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roundtable was held as part of the development of a peacekeeping technology strategy, developed jointly by DPO, DOS and DMSPC. Acknowledging the potential threat and opportunities digital technologies pose, the strategy will be a key component of the next phase of Action for Peacekeeping (A4P)<\/strong> implementation, and will set out goals and related actions for the Secretariat as well as external partners. The strategy will focus on four broad areas: (1) security and protection, (2) monitoring and analysis of conflicts in the implementation of the mandate, (3) training and qualification of civilian and uniformed personnel and (4) trends in the use of technology by parties to the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
