The 1 for 8 Billion campaign has just launched a series of profiles that will analyze the proposals of candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. The initiative aims to increase transparency and enhance public debate around the selection of the organization\u2019s next leader. <\/p>\n\n
Developed in partnership with a diverse network of civil society organizations, the series will examine how each candidate addresses the key challenges of the contemporary international agenda\u2014from conflict prevention and peace operations to climate change and reform of the multilateral system.<\/p>\n\n
The profiles will be published in collaboration with the journalistic platform PassBlue following the UN General Assembly\u2019s interactive dialogues, scheduled for April 21 and 22. During these sessions, candidates will present their visions and respond to questions from member states and civil society. <\/p>\n\n
The initiative also systematizes a set of key questions that experts and partner organizations consider central to evaluating the candidates. Among the highlighted topics are humanitarian action, sustainable development, inclusion of civil society and youth, gender equality, global governance, and tackling the climate crisis. <\/p>\n\n
On the climate front, for example, participating organizations seek to understand how candidates plan to maintain the 1.5\u00b0C target of the Paris Agreement, strengthen climate finance, and support developing countries in implementing their international commitments. <\/p>\n\n
The 1 for 8 Billion campaign brings together civil society organizations from different regions of the world, including Plataforma CIP\u00d3, and advocates for a more transparent, inclusive, and participatory process in selecting the highest office of the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n
