In the last 4 years, the Brazilian government and the country’s National Congress have acted to loosen Brazil’s environmental legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The advance or retreat of bills in the environmental area responds not only to the pressure from domestic actors such as lobbyists, unions, civil society organizations, businessmen, and campaign funders but also from international actors.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Against this background, CIP\u00d3’s new Strategic Report, entitled “Money, power and laws: campaign financing from environmental offenders in the Legal Amazon and legislative proposals in the National Congress.” The article analyzes the performance of Brazilian parliamentarians from the Legal Amazon states, based on the propositions of bills in the socio-environmental area, compared against an analysis of donations to the campaigns of candidates (at the presidential, governor, state and national congress levels) that ran for office in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In partnership with Lagom Data<\/a>, CIP\u00d3 assessed donations made by individuals and shareholders of companies that were subject to fines and\/or embargoes for environmental violations in the Legal Amazon between July 1998 and February 2022. The objective is to facilitate the understanding of the relationships between campaign financing and possible efforts to loosen Brazil’s existing environmental legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on these analyses, CIP\u00d3 researchers Gabrielle Alves and Renata Albuquerque Ribeiro offer recommendations for initiatives and public policies aimed at strengthening transparency and public participation in the process of formulating laws in the environmental area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
